What Baby & Me classes teach me? (2 min read)

When I first started offering Baby & Me last year, many of friends from the yogi circle wondered what this was all about: do you use the babies as props? What if they cry and poop? What about the hassle?

We thought all yoga classes are created equal.

But they are not!

Yes there’ll be babies crying, wanting to be nursed and attended to. They will be fighting for our attention, and instead of having a long stretch of 60 minutes uninterrupted, the practice will probably be broken into short intervals. It’s a little messy, but isn’t life as well?

And yes and no, babies can be used as “props” (like adding that extra weight in your arms when you’re in forward fold). But they are also not because they are complete human beings just like everyone of us - they do not necessarily wish to interact with you whenever you want!

If your baby happens to be sleeping sweetly the whole class, you’ll enjoy a good old practice (like you used to?).

But wait, are we really that uninterrupted in “non baby & me” class? Have you ever had your monkey mind flustering right int the middle of your Bakasana making you fall? And are other classes really so sanitized from noises & distractions? Probably not!

And in this age with our focus stolen, attention span shortest ever, how is yoga still relevant as a practice of cultivating stillness & calmness - especially when you have a new role - parents!?!

Baby & me classes taught me how to make the best out of no matter how long you have and just be in that moment, without attachment on how long it should be (you can never anticipate when your baby or other babies will cry).

And from a teacher’s POV, I do not count on whether students look meditative & zen (I can never speak for their nervous system anyways) or if they reciprocate with undivided attention. I simply deliver the sequence, hold space and just be. I had so much growth out of it!
